The Jayson Collins Sextet is a high-energy jazz group playing through a mix of joyful and eclectic original tunes. The band is fronted by trumpet, alto and tenor saxophones, and is supported by piano, bass and drums. Jay Collins wrote most tunes and arrangements with a combination of the 60’s blue note sound and the innovations of Thelonius Monk in mind. The sextet travels the diverse roads connecting groove, bop, modal, afro-cuban, ballad and swing. Collins, a Chippewa Valley resident, names Cannonball Adderley, Art Blakey, Dave Holland and Horace Silver as influences. He has studied with be-bop legend Don Lanphere and contemporary greats Warren Rand and Renato Caranto, is an active member of the Troppo Big Band and has played in small jazz groups, big bands, gospel choirs, rhythm and blues bands and musicals all over the country. www.myspace.com/jaysoncollins
