The Eau Claire River flows generally westward through northern Eau Claire County for about 40 mi (64 km), past the city of Altoona to its confluence with the Chippewa River in downtown Eau Claire. Dams along its course in Eau Claire County causes the river to form Lake Eau Claire and Lake Altoona. Upstream from Altoona, just north of the village of Fall Creek, the river passes over a Waterfall known as Big Falls, which is the site of a County park. It sits just north of the city’s downtown area. The park's boat landing provides easy access to the 840 acre lake. It’s a quiet place, where hundreds come to have fun, or just relax.Opportunities for individuals to get involved with lakes such as Loon Watch, Clean Boats Clean Waters, and Beaver Creek Reserve Nature Mapping. The park offers a youth baseball field, Hillcrest Golf & Country Club, five tennis courts, a basketball court, open pavilion, playground equipment, a clubhouse and shelter for family or business gatherings, a large beach area, changing facilities, cooking grills, sand volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, a playground, Musical entertainment and recreation facility. Add to that list, the Ski Sprites. If the group gets the green light, they’ll start performing on the lake next summer.
