Winterfest: "The Chippewa Valley Celebration of Winter"

The Chippewa Valley Celebration of Winter, Eau ClaireWinterfest features many family activities including a professional snow carving, children's slide, sleigh rides, children's games, cross-country skiing and a family snow carving contest, to name just a few. Experience outdoor volleyball tournament, car races, fishing tournaments, timber sports and many other special events, including a hot air balloon race and balloon glow. Most winter carnivals involve traditional winter pursuits such as ice carving, snow carving, skating, skiing and dog sledding. Enjoy the Chippewa Valley as you celebrate winter season.

The city of Eau Claire has plenty of salt and sand ready to go when the snow starts flying. Chippewa Valley Youth Choirs perform Winter Concert (often part of a larger program like a Martin Luther King celebration), a Kidz Kabaret (in partnership with the Eau Claire Children's Theatre). A few social events are on the calendar as well for the kids to have fun with their musical peers.

Eau Claire County's extensive trails, along the Chippewa and Eau Claire Rivers, offer breath-taking views to hikers and bicyclists in summer and snowmobilers in winter. Nature lovers will be exhilarated by diversity of habitats and wildlife observed in the Beaver Creek Reserve, including bears, wild turkeys and tufted titmice. Winter camping, snowshoeing, cross Snowmobile at Eau Claire Winterfest country skiing and the company of friends is part of a winter weekend getaway to the Porcupine Mountains in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Trails are groomed for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing during the winter season, and rentals are available. In addition, nearby ski hills provide great local skiing in the winter.

Get around

Like most U.S. cities of its size, all Eau Claire offers by the way of mass transit are a relatively anemic municipal bus system. The buses have bike racks.

The downtown and Water Street areas, and most of the University academic buildings, are located within a river valley. Other parts of the town are located on higher ground. Walking and biking is an option in and between downtown, Water Street, and the University lower campus. However, for most folks (particularly in the winter) travel to other parts of the city will be by auto, taxi, or bus.
