The Chippewa County Historical Society and Genealogical Society are housed in the Parish of Notre Dame's former convent at 123 Allen Street. The Area History Center offers exhibit rooms displaying period furniture, mementos and photographs. Also visit the 1894 Goldsmith Memorial Chapel. It is located in the Area History Center, next to Nortre Dame Church on the East Hill. The building, built in 1883, was formerly the Notre Dame Convent.
The Chippewa County Cemetery Index, published in 1998, contains 50,000 names transcribed from all the tombstones in Chippewa County. It shows the location of the cemeteries, and tells the history of all the cemeteries. All this work has been done, and continues to be done, by dedicated volunteers. The Library owns a microfilm reader and one reader/printer. Copies are 10 cents per page. As of June 1, 2000, the library no longer orders genealogy-related items for which there is a fee, such as out-of-state census records. Patrons may contact the following organizations directly.
