Page 4 of 4 Historic Schlegelmilch-McDaniel HouseSchlegelmilch House is an orientation/study center for immigration history and the starting point for theme tours of downtown Eau Claire; incorporate research on ethnic neighborhoods into new segments of the “Neighborhood” exhibit; and invite students, teachers, and other community members to learn actively by participating in project research, program development, and new educational programs.
The Schlegelmilch House will come to life, not only as a museum but also as a forum where teachers, students, researchers and museum curators meet to make the connection between the past and the present. It also offer a glimpse of what life was like in the mid-1800's.Photographing Eau Claire outdoor enthusiasts will be in heaven in the Eau Claire area.
In 1871, a year before Eau Claire formally became a city, Herman and Augusta Schlegelmilch built one of the community's first brick homes in the hopes of surviving the lumber town's many fires. It is one of the city's first brick homes, constructed because of the fear of fires which swept the lumber town of Eau Claire. Tour this beautiful home filled with furnishings from the earliest decades of its long history. This home is also the site of a variety of workshops and special events, including the annual Teddy Bear Picnic held in August. Located in Downtown Eau Claire on the corner of Lake and Farwell Streets. Today, the house, located at 517 S. Farwell St., directly across Farwell St. from the Christ Church Cathedral, is an exhibit of the Chippewa Valley Museum.
Child's cradle on rockers attributed to Herman Schlegelmilch, Eau Claire, 1860-1880. Family history suggests that Herman Schlegelmilch of Eau Claire made this cradle for his children. It is among the furnishings at the Schlegelmilch House in Eau Claire, an historic house owned and operated by the Chippewa Valley Museum.
Extend your visit to the Schlegelmilch House with this artifact search-and-study exercise led by trained museum docents. Each student will be assigned an artifact to discover and identify.
