In summer, visit the recognizing Cook Rutledge Mansion historical significance and high Victorian - Italianate style architecture historic Cook-Rutledge Mansion; the stately, redbrick homes are awed by 19th century extravagance. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, this is a magnificent example of high Victorian Italianate architecture. This lavish two story red brick home featuring gingerbread trim, cupola and veranda with extending porte-cochere was built in 1873. This lumber baron's home has been meticulously restored and completely furnished. Because of its extraordinary combination of carved woodwork, parquet floors, crystal chandeliers, stained glass windows, silver doorknobs, ceiling artistry and unique fireplaces, it is one of the most unusual historic homes in Wisconsin. Mr. Edward Rutledge performed extensive remodeling when he purchased the house. He made the Mansion one of the most beautiful and elegant homes in Northern Wisconsin. Mr. Rutledge also built the Hannah M. Rutledge home for the Aged, located on Bridgewater Avenue, in memory of his beloved wife. In 1915 Dayton Cook purchased the home and in 1973 it was sold to the Chippewa County Historical Society by surviving family member Mabel Cook. This made it possible to have this beautiful mansion open to the public for tours. During the Christmas Holidays the Mansion is decorated in a beautiful Victorian manner. It is now owned by the Cook-Rutledge Mansion, Inc., a non-profit organization. The mansion is open to the public for tours. During the Christmas holidays (special tours that you can also buy Christmas ornaments and listen to musical entertainment), it is decorated in a beautiful Victorian manner. Visiting hour:The mansion is open June through August, Thursday - Sunday with tours given at 2 and 3 p.m. Admission is $5.00 for adults and $1.00 for children 18 and under.
