From Pastor Kangas:

Many passages in the Bible point to duties of congregations and pastors, and many are directed to parents. To parents is laid the heavy and important responsibility for Christian Education. Over many generations the task has drifted from parents to the church, and its Sunday school and Confirmation instruction. Frankly, it places the church in a role that we were never intended to perform, and we are not doing very well at it. Parents, need the church to help, but not take primary responsibility.  Praying in the home with children strengthens the family, and impresses on children the importance of God and spiritual life. I have been impressed in my ministry by bed ridden elderly, who prayed with me the Lord’s Prayer, and then add the children’s bed time prayer, “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. Amen.” Where did he learn it? The Church? No! This gentleman learned it in the home in practice and not in the church or Sunday School.

Parents, if you want well grounded children in the Christian faith, then you will have to take charge and make your home a place of Christian teaching, prayer, and example. We will be here to help. But, you are in charge, and responsible to God himself for the spiritual life of your children. “Teach a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
